Let It Be

“Let It Be is my ring tone.” This I often share with participants when we arrive at the place in the Mindfulness course where we talk about Allowing and Accepting. And so during James Corban’s ‘Car Pool Karaoke’, when Paul McCartney told the story of how he came to write the song, just as James was touched and brought to tears, so too was I. Paul recounted, “I had a dream in the 60’s where my Mum, who had died, came to me in the dream and was reassuring me, saying ‘It’s going to be ok. Just let it be.” and with these comforting words, he felt a wave of blessed assurance and was inspired to write the infamous song.

I reflected upon a time in my life, a time of deep despair and loneliness. I was going through a significant life transition. Travelling solo, I was driving through the countryside, doing my best through my tears, to bear the ache and longing in my broken heart. The radio was on and with the next song, the familiar tune began to play. ‘When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me. Speaking words of wisdom. Let it be…’ And while I had heard the words and music many times before, in that moment, ‘Let It Be’ took on a much deeper meaning. I had a visceral sense that I was not alone. I became aware of a comforting presence beside me, holding the space, holding me. The tears subsided, the pain softened. I exhaled. And as I let it be, I began to leave past behind and come into the present moment. I lifted my gaze from an intense focus on the road, loosened my grip on the steering wheel, and quietly began noticing the beauty that was surrounding me. The hills, the loch, the green, the blue. The landscape, my homeland, enveloped and grounded me. And so I drove on, quietly humming the tune and began steadily moving towards the life that was awaiting me, with a deep knowing that sometimes the best gift we can receive is the message to Let It Be.

Let It Be

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.

by Paul McCartney and John Lennon
